Chinese Vice-Premier Hui Liangyu said Thursday China would work hard together with other countries and international organizations to promote the development of a global bamboo and rattan industry.

Addressing the International Conference on the International Networks for Bamboo and Rattan (INBAR) in China and the World which opened in Beijing Thursday, the vice-premier said the Chinese government has focused on the development of INBAR and conscientiously implemented the Headquarters Agreement for INBAR signed in June 1998.

Jointly initiated by China, Canada and United Nations International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD), INBAR is the first independent, non-profit international organization headquartered in Beijing, which aims to provide and promote appropriate technologies and other solutions to enhance the contribution of bamboo and rattan to livelihood security, ecological security and food security.

Since it was formally established on November 6 in 1997 in Beijing, INBAR's the member countries have increased from 9 to 27.

China will continue to support the development of INBAR and sincerely welcome more countries to join INBAR and hope that more international institutions and organizations to pay attention to and support INBAR's development, said Hei.

Dr. Ian Hunter, director general of INBAR has expressed gratitude to the Chinese government for its outstanding contribution to the establishment and development of INBAR.

He said INBAR would continue to work hard at poverty reduction and ecological environment protection within the context of a sustainable bamboo and rattan base by supporting the international cooperation on the research in this field.

The Chinese government has committed itself to financially supporting INBAR, and has constructed a new headquarters for the organization, which has been in operation since this August.
