Sri Lankan President Chandrika Kumaratunga has ordered that the printing of government gazette notification for the imposition of emergency state be stopped, officials confirmed.

This move was seen as an official revocation of the state of emergency which she imposed on Wednesday.

Kumaratunga unexpectedly sacked three key ministers involved in talks with Tamil Tiger rebels Tuesday and suspended the parliament for two weeks. She also ordered the deployment of troops at the state-owned TV and radio stations as well as a power plant.

All these took place while Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe, the president's arch political rival, was on an official tour to the United States.

Wickremesinghe returned home early on Friday, reportedly with the support of the United States where he met President George W. Bush on Wednesday.
