Mauritanian former president Mohamed Khouna Ould Haidallah was arrested Sunday morning after announcing rejection to the result of the presidential elections, local reports said.

Reports said that Haidallah was taken away by police from his home, hours after President Maaouya Ould Sid'Ahmed Taya was declared winning reelection with 66.7 percent of the votes.

In the Friday's poll, Haidallah, who tried to win back power 19years after being overthrown by Taya, garnered 18.73 percent of the vote, the major challenger to the 62-year-old incumbent president.

The elections had come in for severe criticism. The opposition, charging there was fraud and ballot-box stuffing in the elections, has rejected the result and called for a new vote.

It was the second arrest in three days for Haidallah, who had been briefly detained on the eve of the poll on charges of plotting a coup.
