Tianjin officials to sit exams on legal knowledge

Around 400 senior officials in Tianjin Municipality, north China, are expected to sit exams on legal knowledge this week, as part of the city's efforts to promote legal education among its government staff.

Around 400 senior officials in Tianjin Municipality, north China, are expected to sit exams on legal knowledge this week, as part of the city's efforts to promote legal education among its government staff.

The move comes after another 1,072 senior officials took the same exam on Saturday and 82,000 officials at lower levels took itearlier.

"Promoting legal awareness and legal education among governmentemployees is fundamental to governing the country by law," said Liu Guangju, director of Tianjin Justice Bureau.

Starting this year, the exam is expected to be held annually asa qualification for Tianjin government employees with each year's questions concerning new laws and regulations.

Senior staff at the department, or bureau level and below in the city of Tianjin are required to sit it every year.

"Nobody will be excused from it and those who fail will not be promoted," Liu stressed.

Questions in the exam are devised by noted professors from institutions of higher-learning in Tianjin along with experts fromthe government.

Shen Jiacong, head of Hexi district in Tianjin, took the exam on Saturday. "I liked the questions, such as the one concerning Law on Administrative Reconsideration. They are closely related tomy work," he said. "Also, I got to learn various laws in a systematic way through preparing for the exam."

She Qingwen, head of Nankai district in Tianjin, felt a little nervous before the exam. "But when I got down to the questions, I felt better. I think I am fully prepared," he said.

Wu Changshun, director of Public Security Bureau of Tianjin, was at easy and comfortable with the exam. "My work deals with lawa lot, so I am acquainted with most of the questions."
