China storm to seventh straight win at World Cup

World Grand Prix champions China stormed to their seventh straight win at the 2003 women's volleyball World Cup as they downed Argentina 25-16, 25-15 and 25-19 in Toyama, Japan on Sunday.

World Grand Prix champions China stormed to their seventh straight win at the 2003 women's volleyball World Cup as they downed Argentina 25-16, 25-15 and 25-19 in Toyama, Japan on Sunday.

Zhang Yuehong and Li Shan replaced regular starters Wang Lina and Zhou Suhong to play the whole match. Zhang celebrated her 28th birthday with a game-high 17 points.

"I would like to give them (Zhang and Li) opportunities to play and help them get used to the atmosphere of the competition," said Chinese head coach Chen Zhonghe. "I think they played to their capabilities today."

The 1.96-meter Zhao Ruirui added 16 points for China and Li Shan and Liu Ya'nan added nine apiece.

"The Chinese offense and defense were just too powerful for us," said Argentina's head coach Hugo Jauregui. "We did okay at the start of each set, but then we became less stable as each game went on."

"I'm very satisfied with our performance. I think we did well to get more than 15 points in each set against the best team in the world," said Argentine captain Maria Vincente.

Paula Parisi led the Argentines with 12 points.

Meanwhile, the United States held off Turkey 24-26, 25-22, 26-24, 22-25 and 15-10 in Sapporo.

Earlier on Sunday, Italy beat Poland 25-15, 25-17 and 25-22 and Cuba outclassed Egypt 25-15, 25-10 and 25-16.
