US Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld said Monday that he will visit Japan and South Korea this week to discuss bilateral military ties and cooperation in the global war on terrorism.

"I'll be traveling to Asia to visit with US troops and to thank them for the important work they're doing in the region," Rumsfeld told a news briefing in the Foreign Press Center in downtown Washington.

"We'll also be having meetings with two key allies in Japan andthe Republic of Korea to discuss the arrangements we have with them and our close cooperation in the global war on terror," he said.

Rumsfeld said he is leaving on Wednesday for his first trip to the region since he became secretary of defense nearly three yearsago. But he did not provide a more detailed itinerary.

He said his trip to Japan will focus on how to adjust and improve the military alliance between the two countries as well as bilateral cooperation in Iraq and Afghanistan.

As for his trip to South Korea, the secretary suggested that UStroop reduction will be on his agenda but he stressed that the adjustment is eventually aimed at improving US deterrence in the future.
