Most British voters strongly disapprove of US President George W. Bush's handling of Iraq, according to an opinion poll published by the British Times newspaper on Tuesday.

The Populus poll, which interviewed 964 people aged 18 and over from Nov. 7 to Nov. 9, found that a majority, 60 percent of the British people, disapprove of the way Bush has dealt with Iraq compared to the 20 percent who back his actions.

The survey also showed that almost half the public, 49 percent, thought it was the wrong thing to launch military action in Iraq, which suggests a sharp fall in support for the US-led war against Iraq among British voters.

The poll, published just one week ahead of Bush's forthcoming state visit to Britain, also found that almost three fifths of British voters, 59 percent, believed that America's standing in the world has diminished under Bush's leadership, while 39 percent thought that he has proved to be a strong president.

The indication of British public hostility to the US leader came one day after British Prime Minister Tony Blair, the staunchest US ally on Iraq, delivered a defense speech of Bush's visit next week.

In the speech at the Lord Mayor's banquet late Monday, Blair asserted that the visit had come at "exactly the right time" and that would be a disaster for both sides if Europe allowed anti-Americanism to define its foreign policy.

British anti-war campaigners last month voiced determination to make a protest during Bush's visit to Britain, which is believed to be the first full state visit of an American president since the British Queen came to the throne 52 years ago.
