Most of people in Macao Special Administrative Region (SAR) believe that a comeback of severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS) is very likely in the future, according to a poll on 1,201 local residents.

The survey, conducted by the Macao Poly-Tech University and came out Tuesday, showed that 75 percent of the respondents held that SARS may strike another blow to the region, and 57 percent said they don't know about the SAR government's SARS prevention and control measures.

About one fourth of the surveyed people said that they have not taken any precautions themselves against the epidemic, and nearly half of them said they have done very little precaution.

However, the surveyed people gave a high evaluation on the government's work to fight against SARS in the first half year, when Macao only reported one such case despite the pressure of the SARS outbreak in its surrounding regions of south China's Guangdong Province and Hong Kong.

"The survey result shows that Macao people are very confident about the government's ability in the epidemic control, which was partly attributed to its previous success in handling the issue, but they lack the knowledge on how it was done to protect themselves," said one of the survey conductors, who surnamed Cheang.

Koi Kuok Ieng, director of the Macao Health Service said on Monday that Macao has started training of nurses on SARS control and treatment. The Government Hospital of Macao expanded the recruitment of nurses this year in case of personnel shortage when a possible SARS comeback attacks the city.
