The Treasury Department of the United States said Wednesday it had added 15 foreigners to its list of entities suspected of financing terrorist groups, barring any US citizens from conducting financial transactions with them.

The action was taken after the Italian government asked the United Nations to add the 15 people, most of them from the Middle East and Africa, to its list of suspected terrorists and freeze their assets. Member countries are required to freeze the assets of those on the UN list.

Most of the 15 people are already in the custody of Italian authorities, which accused them of aiding illegal immigration and supporting al Qaida. The Treasury Department said they were involved with al Qaida in the Italian cities of Milan, Cremona andParma.
