A US helicopter shot dead seven Iraqi attackers as they were ready to launch rockets at a US military base in northern Iraq late Thursday, the military said on Friday.

The Apache flying a reconnaissance mission spotted the enemy whowere setting up a rocket aiming at the Speicher base, 200 km north of Baghdad, a spokeswoman said in Tikrit, 170 north of the capital.

The crew members on board the helicopter opened fire, killing seven in action and wounding another, all of whom were believed Saddam Hussein's loyalists, she said.

Later, the US troops searched the area and discovered 300 rockets and around 300 missiles in bunkers.

Great concerns have been raised over thousands of surface-to-airmissiles and rockets still unaccounted for after the downfall of Saddam's regime in April.

Two US helicopters were feared shot down by a missile and a rocket-propelled grenade respectively in the last two weeks, in which 22 US soldiers were killed and 26 others wounded.
