Chinese Vice Premier Huang Ju on Friday urged the country's information technology professionals to seize the current strategic opportunity to vigorously develop the country's information industry.

Huang, also a member of the Standing Committee of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee, made the remark when visiting "2003 China International Telecommunications Equipment, Technology Exhibition" in Beijing Friday night.

After inspecting the exhibition booths of China Telecom, China Mobile, China Unicom and China Netcom, Huang said that since the Third Plenary Session of the 16th CPC Central Committee, which was held in early October, worked out the details for the future development of China's socialist market economy, the country's information industry is faced with a new, golden period for strategic development.

In the future, China's information sector should continue to introduce and absorb advanced information technology from overseas, while vigorously enhancing its own research and development ability, he said.

He also said the Chinese government would support some promising domestic information enterprises to expand themselves amid intensive international competition.

More than 400 companies and organizations from 21 countries and regions are attending the exhibition, which was sponsored jointly by the Chinese Ministry of Information Industry and the China Council for the Promotion of International Trade.

The information industry has become one of the country's pillar industries. Today, China boasts the world's largest number of phone users and the world's second largest number of Internet users.
