Customs seizes 170,000 live cartridges in southwestern Nigeria

The Nigeria Customs Services (NSC) on Sunday recovered 170,000 live cartridges along the Benin-Ore Expressway in Nigeria's southwestern state of Ogun, local radio reported Monday.

The Nigeria Customs Services (NSC) on Sunday recovered 170,000 live cartridges along the Benin-Ore Expressway in Nigeria's southwestern state of Ogun, local radio reported Monday.

According to the report, the NSC also impounded the lorry carrying the ammunition abandoned by persons believed to be arms smugglers.

The arms smugglers reportedly escaped by jumping into the bush when sighting a federal anti-smuggling squad that was patrolling the area.

NSC Deputy Comptroller Ade Fadahunsi who led the squad told reporters that preliminary investigations showed that the ammunition haul concealed in empty cartons and bags of charcoal was the greatest one by the NSC for years. "It is the largest seizure made so far," he said.

The ammunition was reportedly smuggled into Nigeria through Badagry creeks from a neighboring country.

According to the NSC deputy comptroller, the ammunition was currently in the custody of the Ogun State Police Command. "We have handed the ammunition over to the police according to the law," he said.

The NSC officer also told reporters that the smugglers did not expect the customs along the expressway at a spot close to Iwopin Waterside.
