The Diet convened for a short special session following the Nov. 9 House of Representatives election and reelect Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) President Junichiro Koizumi as prime minister.

After his reelection, Koizumi will launch his cabinet again, which will have many pressing issues to deal with such as Iraq, North Korea(DPRK), pension reforms, and the sliding stock market.

But the series of procedural political events during Wednesday is unlikely to offer any surprises.

Koizumi's reelection is certain since the LDP-led coalition controls a majority in both houses of the Diet.

Koizumi will retain all ministers given he reshuffled his cabinet two months ago.

The ruling and opposition camps have agreed to pick Yohei Kono, an LDP veteran who formerly served as LDP president and foreign minister, as speaker of the lower house. Kansei Nakano, a senior member of the main opposition Democratic Party of Japan (DPJ), will take the post of vice speaker.

In the morning, Koizumi and his cabinet ministers resigned in line with the Constitution. The technical procedure is required at the first special session convened after a general election.

Koizumi will be reelected by a majority of votes by members in each chamber in the afternoon.

The session, the first since the election for the 480-seat lower house Nov. 9, is expected to last for nine days through Nov. 27.
