Two people appeared before the Beijing No. 1 Intermediate People's Court Wednesday on charges of disturbing the social order on Tian'anmen Square in the Chinese capital in October.

According to the prosecutor, on Oct. 8, Zhang Liji, 49, from Fuzhou City of east China's Fujian Province, drove a car to a bridge on the Jinshui River on the northern fringes of Tian'anmen Square and threw leaflets out of the car.

He then attempted to set himself and the car on fire by igniting the gasoline and fireworks on board his automobile before being stopped by police.

The prosecutor said Zhang had broken the Criminal Law by disturbing the social order and endangering public security, but he may be given a shorter sentence because he was confirmed mentally disordered.

The other suspect, Ye Guoqiang, 43, from Beijing, jumped into the Jinshui River on Oct. 1, National Day, causing a serious disturbance.

Police also found Ye had made many attempts to cause trouble in the Tian'anmen Square area and areas near government departments and foreign embassies since May 2003.

The court will make the judgment on another day.
