The Dutch government is considering extension of its troop deployment in southern Iraq by another six months, Radio Netherlands reported Friday.

The decision is most likely to be made next week, the report said.

Dutch Prime Minister Jan Peter Balkenende was quoted as saying that the cabinet is in favor of extending the deployment. However the government first wanted to await a report on the security situation in the region where the forces are stationed.

There are 1,100 Dutch troops in the province of Al-Muthanna in Iraq. They are under the command of the British division which controls southern Iraq.
