US Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld on Friday labeled two Arab satellite television stations as "anti-coalition."
"At the present time, two of the most popular stations, Al-Arabiya and Al-Jazeera, are violently anti-coalition and were pro-Saddam Hussein," Rumsfeld told a town hall meeting at the Pentagon.
He said a US-run satellite channel would begin broadcasts in
Iraq
next month, which is supposed to counter the influence of satellite stations such as Al-Jazeera and Al-Arabiya.
"It will take some time to persuade people to watch alternativeprogramming," he said.
The
Qatar
-based Al-Jazeera and Dubai-based Al-Arabiya have beenrepeatedly accused by US military officials of having an anti-American bias, which was denied by the TV networks.
The American-led Coalition Provisional Authority in Iraq, headed by Paul Bremer, was working hard to get its own satellite station broadcasting, General Richard Myers, chairman of the US Joint Chiefs of Staff, said.
The new station was trying to develop programming aimed at attracting Iraqis' attention from Al-Jazeera and Al-Arabiya, and "it's supposed to be fully up by next month," he said.
