Nine schoolmasters in NW China deposed for overcharging students

Nine schoolmasters in northwest China's Ningxia Hui Autonomous Region have been dismissed so far this year for overcharging students.

Nine schoolmasters in northwest China's Ningxia Hui Autonomous Region have been dismissed so far this year for overcharging students.

The nine, all heads of public primary or elementary schools, were found to have collected excessively high fees, regional education department sources said.

Ningxia's education department this year has stepped up effortsto curb illegal charging in local primary and elementary schools, and has so far tracked down nearly 4 million yuan (480,000 US dollars) overcharged, most of which has been returned to the students.

Han Qingxin, an official with the regional education department,said the department this year has handled 73 cases of illegal overcharging in schools and punished 41 people involved.
