Iraq's government appoints envoy to Washington

The US-backed Iraqi Interim Government announced Sunday that it has appointed Rend Rahim Franky as the representative of Iraq to Washington.

The US-backed Iraqi Interim Government announced Sunday that it has appointed Rend Rahim Franky as the representative of Iraq to Washington.

"It is one of the most important steps to regain new Iraq's international position," said Hoshyar Zebari, Iraq's interimforeign minister.

Franky, the newly installed charge d'affaires, will be holding her office in the Bahrain Embassy in Washington instead of Algeria,Zebari told a joint press conference here.

For her part, Franky said she resolved on making Iraq's representation in Washington an example for other countries to follow.

She noted that she faces a great responsibility as Iraq has not been represented in the United States for 13 years. She also expressed her determination to convey Iraqis' will to achieve independence and sovereignty.

Franky was born in Baghdad and was given the name of Rend Rahim. She was married to an American and became a US citizen in 1987.

  She has lived most of her life in the United States.I n the past 12 years, Franky, a Shiite Muslim, has worked as an Iraqi oppositionist and held an office called "Iraqi Home" in Washington.
