Chinese takes all-around title at gymnastics Asians

World bronze medallist Zhang Nan of China took advantage of her opponents' slips and eased into victory in women's all-around event at the Asian Gymnastics Championships in Guangzhou Sunday.

Asian gymnastics championships open after five years delay

World bronze medallist Zhang Nan of China took advantage of her opponents' slips and eased into victory in women's all-around event at the Asian Gymnastics Championships in Guangzhou Sunday.

Her teammate Fan Ye, who surprisingly won the beam title in theworld championships in August, took the silver with 36.675 points.Another Chinese Chen Miaojie was third on 36.575.

Women's all-around competition witnessed several competitors fall off the apparatus, including title contenders Fan Ye, Chen Miaojie and Wang Tiantian, all from China.

While all of her teammates misplayed in different exercises, the 17-year-old Zhang made no mistakes in all the four categories to collect 37.975 points for the top honor.

The Asian triple champion did especially well in floor and uneven bars, leading the two individual apparatus events with 9.500 and 9.600 points respectively.

"Zhang Nan did a very good job today, even better than what shedid in the world championships in August," Zhang's coach Liu Qunlin said. Zhang took the all-around bronze medal in this year's world championships in Anaheim, the Untied States.

"Her steadiness is the key to tonight's victory," Liu added.

Zhang was also satisfied with herself. "I become more and moremature as I accumulate experience from each major event, and my next goal is Olympic champion," she said.

In the junior competition, Huang Lu of China scored 36.600 points to win the title, with teammate Wu Mengyun finishing secondin 36.400 and Ono Shoko of Japan third in 36.275.
