A new light rail line began trial operation Tuesday in Shanghai's suburbs, making local traffic transport more convenient.

The 17.2-km No. 5 line runs from Xinzhuang to the Minhang development zone on the outskirts.

The elevated light rail is the first of its kind ever built in the country and also the first one running Shanghai-made light rail train cars.

Currently, passengers can catch the train on the new line every 23 minutes, a period which could be shortened to every five minutes when 17 trains are operated by 2004.

According to the plan, a total of 22 trains will eventually serve the line, shortening the waiting time of passengers to three minutes.

Trains running on the line are also equipped with security protection systems, enabling passengers to inform drivers of emergency situations with interphones installed in each carriage.
