Major grain growers in south China's Guangdong Province will share a 100-million-yuan (12 million US dollars) subsidy each year from 2004 on.

This information was released by Guangdong Governor Huang Huahua Wednesday at a provincial meeting on agriculture and grains.

Of the total fund, 30 million yuan (3.6 million US dollars) will come from the provincial food security fund, and 70 million yuan (8.4 million US dollars) will come from similar funds in counties and cities, the governor noted.

Guangdong province is now well supplied with grain, though it has to introduce grain from other provinces since its farmland acreage is not in proportion to its large population.

The provincial governor stressed that efficient measures should be taken to ensure food security in the province, including the protection of arable land, increasing input to encourage grain production and promotion of agricultural technology.
