Premier Wen Jiabao has urged local governments to guarantee the payment of compensation to people who lost their property when they helped the government in major flood deviation programs this summer.

While reading a report on the issue, the premier stressed the compensation must be distributed to these people under supervision by the public and the media.

The central government will pay a total of 403.41 million yuan (48.55 million US dollars) to Anhui and Hunan provinces, which is 70 percent of the entire compensation to these who are to be paid for their sacrifice. The local governments will pay the other 30 percent of the compensation.

The state will also subsidize the construction of housing for the people relocated.

The Ministry of Finance has urged provincial governments to ensure the timely and efficient payment of the compensation, and step up supervision of the payments.

Nine flood-diversion zones in the two provinces were put into use this summer to fight torrential floods, protecting a number of large cities, industries and infrastructure facilities along the Huaihe River valley and a major tributary of the Yangtze River.
