Tribute paid to late noted Uygur leader

A ceremony was held at Beijing's Babaoshan Revolutionary Cemetery Wednesday, to say a final farewell to Seypidin Azizi, a noted Uygur leader who died of illness two days ago at the age of 8 8.

Last respect to noted Uygur leader

A ceremony was held at Beijing's Babaoshan Revolutionary Cemetery Wednesday, to say a final farewell to Seypidin Azizi, a noted Uygur leader who died of illness two days ago at the age of 8 8.

President Hu Jintao and Vice President Zeng Qinghong were among a large number of officials attending the ceremony.

Hu and Zeng, as well as Jiang Zemin, Wu Bangguo, Wen Jiabao, Jia Qinglin, Huang Ju, Wu Guanzheng, Li Changchun and Luo Gan, visited Seypidin Azizi when he was seriously ill, or condoled with his family members after his death.

During the ceremony, the remains of the former Uygur leader were covered with a flag of the Communist Party of China (CPC).

He was regarded as an excellent CPC member, a loyal communist fighter, an excellent leader of the state and the Party on ethnic affairs, an outstanding statesman and an excellent son of the Uygur people.

According to official records, Seypidin Azizi was born into a business family of the Uygur ethnic group in Xinjiang, northwest China, on March 12, 1915. In 1935, he went to study in the Soviet Union, where he became a Marxist.

From 1937, when Seypidin returned to Xinjiang, he was engaged in revolutionary activities and struggles against warlords and the Kuomintang regime. In 1945, he became a leading official in a temporary revolutionary government in western Xinjiang. Later, he was involved in organizing revolutionary armies composed of ethnic minority people. He was also a leading member of the People's Revolution Party in Xinjiang.

In September 1949, Seypidin Azizi led a delegation from Xinjiang to the first Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference, and became a member of the Central People's Government of New China and a member of the CPPCC National Committee.

On October 15, 1949, he applied to join the Communist Party of China, and two months later, on December 27, he was admitted into the Party.

Since the founding of the People's Republic of China in October 1949, Seypidin Azizi had been mainly engaged in the development ofthe Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region, while he also played an important role in dealing with national issues and foreign affairs. He made a great contribution to the fight against splittism, religious extremism and terrorism.

Seypidin Azizi was an alternate member of the Political Bureau of the 10th and 11th CPC Central Committee, vice chairman of the Standing Committee of the 1st to 7th National People's Congress and vice chairman of the 8th National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference.

Seypidin Azizi was esteemed as a productive writer and an expert on Uygur literature, who left behind him a large number of literary writings.
