Top skaters to compete at Beijing leg of World Cup short track

World champions Apolo Ohno and Choi Eun-kyung will compete at next week's World Cup short track speed skating event in Beijing, organizers said here on Thursday.

World champions Apolo Ohno and Choi Eun-kyung will compete at next week's World Cup short track speed skating event in Beijing, organizers said here on Thursday.

Wang Yitao, chairman of the organizing committee, told a press conference Thursday that a total of 101 skaters from 15 countries and regions will take part in the fourth leg of the World Cup slated for Dec. 5-7.

"We will have a few world-class skaters at the Beijing event," said Wang.

Choi, the women's 1,500m gold medalist at the world championships last March, and her South Korean teammate Ko Gi-hyun,are expected to dominate the women's races, while Ohno, who won the men's 1,500m gold medal at the 2002 Winter Olympics in Salt Lake City, is set to prevail in the men's races.

Li Jiajun, China's best male skater, will spearhead the Chinese challenge on home soil.

The Beijing leg of the World Cup features ten events, including the 500m, 1,000m, 1,500m, all-round and relay for both men and women.
