HK official calls for social cohesion promotion

Chief Secretary for Administration Donald Tsang called for efforts to promote social cohesion Friday.

Chief Secretary for Administration Donald Tsang called for efforts to promote social cohesion Friday.

He said civic organizations that provide strategic linkages among different sectors of the people and between the people and the government are important channels for building social networksand valuable partners in government efforts to promote social cohesion.

He made the remarks at the opening of the Conference on Social Cohesion co-organized by the Faculty of Social Sciences of the University of Hong Kong and the Hong Kong Council of Social Services at the HKU Graduate House on Friday.

Tsang said government efforts to promote social cohesion should also try to capitalize on volunteerism and community participation.It pays to have a community building agenda that promotes the development of community self-help and mutual help groups.

He added that the cross-sector collaboration in research and the free flow of research findings are important. When it comes topolicy formulation and implementation, an integrated approach and systemic evaluation are necessary to ensure proper co-ordination of resources and efforts across different areas.

Tsang believed that given the global nature of many cohesion issues and problems, experts and researchers from different countries and different cultures should work together to share research findings, compare experiences, learn from each other and find solutions to common problems.
