Chinese officials on Friday called on the Russian side to properly deal with issues arising from the deadly fire in a Moscow university that killed at least eight Chinese and many other foreign students.

At a meeting here with acting rector Dmitry Bilibin of the People's Friendship University in southwest Moscow, Cen Jianjun, deputy chief of the International Department of the Chinese Ministry of Education, demanded that the school authority do all it can to rescue the injured, ensure the normal lives and studies of the survivors and receive the relatives of Chinese victims and those injured.

Cen, who heads a joint working group consisting of officials from China's ministries of foreign affairs and education, arrived here Thursday afternoon. The officials discussed with delegates of the Russian Ministry of Education on Friday morning on handling the aftermath of the tragedy.

Monday's pre-dawn fire at a hostel in the renowned university, which was built in 1960 for students from developing nations, killed 37 students and injured nearly 200. Five Chinese are still missing and 43 have been hospitalized.

Bilibin informed the working group that students who survived the fire now reside in other hostels on the campus. Each of them has got clothing and bedding and 3,000 rubles (over 100 US dollars).

He also promised to assist the students to complete their studies and properly receive their families who would come here soon.
