China's radio broadcasts reach 93.3 percent of its nearly 1.3 billion population, compared with 88.3 percent in 1998, according to a meeting sponsored Friday by the State Administration of Radio, Television and Film.

Currently, the country has 306 radio stations, with 1,983 radio programs, which broadcast a total of 22,838 hours a day, said Hu Zhanfan, deputy director of the administration.

In 2003, China's radio stations earned 2.2 billion yuan (about 265 million US dollars) from advertising, while opening 28 special frequencies and 15 digital, satellite-based or wire broadcasts, according to official figures.

The administration has made the year 2003 a year to promote the development of radio broadcasting, Hu said. China now has almost 1.2 billion radio listeners, which indicates that there is great potential for the further development of radio broadcasting, he noted.
