A forum was held in Beijing Friday to mark the 45th anniversary of the adoption of Pinyin, or the phonetic system for transcribing Chinese characters.

Xu Jialu, a vice-chairman of the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress, Chen Zhili, a state councilor, and Wang Xuan, a vice-chairman of the National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference, attended the meeting.

Xu, in an address, said the issuing in 1958 of the Pinyin system was a major event in the cultural history of China and has won the support of people of all walks of life.

Chen called for further efforts from governments at various levels to promote the system.

The Pinyin system, using the Latin alphabet, has been widely used in the country over the past 45 years. It helps people learn, read and write the Chinese language.

The system has also been used for teaching foreigners to study Chinese. Moreover, it was the basis for the government to help 19 ethnic minority groups compose or improve their writing systems.
