Two firefighters survive serious injuries from Hengyang fire

Firefighter Zhao Zhicheng, 18, woke up from a 24-day coma, and his colleague Jiang Chunmao, 21, passed a critical period after being buried in debris for 27 hours.

Firefighter Zhao Zhicheng, 18, woke up from a 24-day coma, and his colleague Jiang Chunmao, 21, passed a critical period after being buried in debris for 27 hours.

The two were seriously injured when fighting a fire in an eight-story building in Hengyang City, in central China's Hunan Province,on Nov. 3, which claimed 20 firefighters' lives.

Zhao was injured in the head. Jiang was the only survivor of 19 firefighters buried in the building, which collapsed after its 412 residents had been moved safely. Jiang showed symptoms of functional exhaustion in organs including his heart, lungs and kidneys.

Sources at the Ministry of Public Security said that it was the worst accident for firefighters since the founding of New China in 1949.
