US Secretary of State Colin Powell urged the United Nations to play an active role in the restoration process of Iraq's self-rule, said French newspaper Liberation published on Friday.

"I want the United Nations to play an active role now...it has the expertise and skills for this type of efforts," Powell said during an interview with the newspaper, noting that US President George W. Bush would also certainly want so.

However, he said the upcoming new UN special representative should cooperate with the Iraqi Governing Council and Paul Bremer,US top civil administrator in Iraq, in such tasks as producing thebasic law, preparing the election of a transition assembly and a transition government.

Powell also said it was too early to talk about a new UN resolution on Iraq at the moment though "it is possible that it might be appropriate at some stage."
