150,000 police officers deployed for Commonwealth summit

The Nigeria Police Force has deployed more than 150,000 officers and men for the oncoming Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM) in December, local newspaper This Day reported Friday.

The Nigeria Police Force has deployed more than 150,000 officers and men for the oncoming Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM) in December, local newspaper This Day reported Friday.

Inspector General of Police Tafa Balogun was quoted as saying that 5,000 vehicles and two helicopters have already been deployedon land and aerial patrol during the meeting.

Balogun, who was addressing police personnel assigned for the CHOGM special duty at the Force Headquarters on Thursday, remindedthe officers of their onerous task of maintaining law and order, protecting lives and property before and during the meeting expected to have Queen Elizabeth of England in attendance.

The police head thanked all the officers involved in the successes recorded during the All African Games in October and implored them not to rest on their oars in the present assignment.

He also promised the men that their welfare and allowance wouldbe well provided for.

The CHOGM is scheduled to be held in Nigeria's capital Abuja onDec. 5-8 and Queen Elizabeth will declare the opening of the meeting on Dec. 5 at the Abuja International Conference Center.
