Shandong makes auto manufacturing a priority industry

East China's Shandong Province is aiming to develop the automotive industry into an economic cornerstone in the next seven years, according to the provincial development plan.

East China's Shandong Province is aiming to develop the automotive industry into an economic cornerstone in the next seven years, according to the provincial development plan.

Shandong will increase its annual production capacity to 1.7 million autos and 3 million vehicles for farm use by the year 2010,the plan shows.

The province will become one of the national production bases of big-name heavy- and light-duty trucks, auto parts, and sedans. Meanwhile, automotive industry will contribute 10 percent to industrial added value of Shandong, said the plan.

Eight areas have been designated for the production of different types of autos, with Jinan and Qingdao focusing on heavy-duty trucks, Weifang, Zibo and Liaocheng on light-duty trucks, Yantai and Qingdao on sedans, Liaocheng and Weihai on buses, and Taian and Jinan on special purpose vehicles.

The China Heavy-Duty Truck Group, based in the provincial capital, Jinan, is the country's largest heavy-duty truck maker.
