Zhong Nanshan, the heroic doctor who spearheaded China's fight against the SARS outbreak earlier this year, has been awarded "Person of the Year" by national style magazine City Weekend.

For years a leading Chinese specialist in respiratory diseases, Zhong was well known among his peers, but the outbreak of SARS turned him into a household name across the country.

The 66-year-old director of the Guangzhou-based Centre for Respiratory Diseases gained international fame during the SARS outbreak for leading the fight in the hardest-hit region of the deadly disease.

The award is part of the celebrations for the tenth anniversary of City Weekend's mother company Modern Media. Ten other awards were also handed out during the celebrations. (CIRNEWS)
