Quanzhou, a coastal city in east China's Fujian province, has become a major footwear production base in China and meanwhile gains growing popularity worldwide.

The local footwear industry is expected to garner 25 billion yuan (some 3 billion US dollars) in output value this year, as against 21.9 billion yuan (2.6 billion dollars) in 2002 with output of more than 800 million shoes, according to statistics issued at a recent local footwear forum.

Quanzhou is home to more than 4,000 shoe manufacturers with some 500,000 employees. It shares 80 percent of China's sneaker market and 60 percent of shoes made locally are exported to overseas countries and regions, including North American and western European nations.

China has become the world's leading footwear producer and exporter, said Xu Yong, president of the China Leather Industry Association, citing that China accounts for 53 percent of the world's footwear output and over 60 percent of the world's footwear exports.

During the forum, Peter Mangione, chairman of the US Association of Footwear Distributors and Retailers, and Alberto Molteni, president of the European Palacongressi Spa, introduced the market situation in the United States and Europe and proposed strategies on how shoe makers in Quanzhou can expand their share in overseas markets.
