US Middle East envoy William Burns left Cairo for Tunisia on Tuesday after a two-day visit to Egypt, Egypt's official MENA news agency reported.

Earlier in the day, Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak met with Burns on the volatile Middle East situation and ways to push forward the US-backed roadmap peace plan.

Burns' visit to Egypt was part of his Middle East trip, which has taken him to Jordan and Israel and will also take him to the Palestinian self-rule areas.

The US envoy's mission came at a time when a hope for salvaging the derailed roadmap peace plan has loomed following the formation of a new Palestinian cabinet in November and a lull in the Palestinian-Israeli violence.

The internationally-drafted blueprint requires reciprocal steps to be taken by Israel and the Palestinians toward peace and envisions a full Palestinian state by 2005.
