Philippine actor Fernando Poe Jr. topped the presidential and vice-presidential candidates, showed a fourth quarter Social Weather Stations survey (SWS) released on Wednesday.

Poe's support jumped to 25 percent from 14 percent in the third quarter, giving him a comfortable lead from fellow opposition rival Senator Panfilo Lacson who was in the fifth place and from President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo who placed the fourth, the survey showed.

Poe was followed by Senator Noli de Castro (24 percent), former education secretary Raul Roco (18 percent), Arroyo (17 percent) and Lacson (10 percent).

Mahar Mangahas, SWS executive director, said Poe and de Castro were considered tied with only a one percentage point difference between them, while Arroyo and Roco were also considered tied.

In the vice-presidential race, de Castro continued to lead, winning 29 percent support, but Senator Loren Legarda has gained support, winning 23 percent, while Senator Ramon Magsaysay, 11 percent.

The SWS used a national sample of 1,200 statistically representative adults for an approximate error margin of 3 percentat the 95 percent confidence level for national-level percentages.

Meanwhile, vice president Teofisto Guingona said Wednesday a second movie star leader for the Philippines need not be a disaster for the country if he avoids bad advice.

Poe wants to follow in the footsteps of his friend deposed President Joseph Estrada, who stormed into power with a landslide win in 1998 but was toppled after being embroiled in a massive corruption scandal three years later.
