Infrastructure construction craze creates more jobs for Tibetans

The on-going key infrastructure construction craze in China's Tibet Autonomous Region has created more jobs for local residents, said sources from the regional development and reform commission.

The on-going key infrastructure construction craze in China's Tibet Autonomous Region has created more jobs for local residents, said sources from the regional development and reform commission.

According to the latest sources, developers of major infrastructure projects employed approximately 290,000 local herdsmen and farmers in Tibet and paid them 7.47 million yuan (about 900,000 US dollars) in wages from January to September this year.

The Party Central Committee and the State Council, China's highest governing body, decided to pump about 31.2 billion yuan (3.76 billion US dollars) into construction of 117 major infrastructure projects in the autonomous region at the fourth meeting on Tibetan work held in June 2001.

Telecom and transportation projects, as well as projects for agriculture, animal husbandry, forestry and water conservancy makeup the bulk of the essential projects that will be financed by the central government, said the sources.

Construction of 38 out of the 117 projects had been completed by September this year, and an accumulated sum of 14.94 billion yuan (about 1.8 billion US dollars) was spent, or 47.9 percent of the total investment.

All the major projects to be financed by the central government will be completed by the end of 2005.
