The death toll of a predawn fire at Moscow's People's Friendship University has reached 39 when a student from Guinea-Bissau died in hospital on Thursday.

One of the dead, "probably a female student from South Korea," remains unidentified, Interfax quoted a police source as saying.

About 200 people were injured in the fire and 168 of them remain hospitalized.

On Wednesday, the university's acting rector Dmitry Bilibin wascharged with violating fire safety regulations. Last week, investigators interrogated Education Minister Vladimir Filippov, who headed the university before receiving his current portfolio.

Russian officials have blamed electric malfunction or inadequate use of household appliances for the deadly blaze, whichbroke out on Nov. 24 in a campus dormitory.
