China expected to surpass France in exports this year

China's exports of electromechanical products have gained a strong momentum and are expected to exceed 190 billion US dollars in 2003, Wei Jianguo, vice-minister of commerce, said on Thursday.

China's exports of electromechanical products have gained a strong momentum and are expected to exceed 190 billion US dollars in 2003, Wei Jianguo, vice-minister of commerce, said on Thursday.

During the first 10 months in 2003, China's exports of electromechanical products reached 178.45 billion US dollars, Wei said.

Electromechanical products have been the leading category in list of China's exported goods for the past eight years, with exports of such products making up nearly half of the country's total exports.

China's exports of electromechanical products hit 118.8 billion US dollars in 2001 and increased to 157.08 billion US dollars in 2002. As 33 percent of China's total exports in 2001, the ratio of exports of electromechanical products to China's total exports rose to 49 percent in 2002 and exceeded for the first time 50 percent as 50.3 percent in the first quarter this year.

In 2002, China's overall exports were just several billion US dollars behind France, ranking the fifth worldwide, and this year China is expected to surpass France thanks to the sharp increase in electromechanical exports, Wei said.

China's exports during the first 10 months hit 348.6 billion US dollars.
