Thai Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra sent a message of congratulation on the launch of the "2003 China Tibetan Culture Week," which is scheduled to be officially opened in Bangkok on Friday evening.

The Thai prime minister said he is pleased to learn that the culture week will be held from Dec. 5 to 18 in Thailand to "take part in celebrating the 76th anniversary of His Majesty the King'sbirthday and enhance the friendship between our two countries."

"On behalf of the Thai people, I wish to express our sincere thanks to the Chinese government and its people for this cordial gesture," Thaksin said in his message.

"Thailand and China have long enjoyed close and friendly relations, which have been moving towards a strategic partnership covering all areas of our cooperation," he said. "Cultural exchanges such as this will certainly help promote mutual understanding between our peoples."

"As Thai and Tibetan people are predominantly Buddhists and share many similarities, we are very glad to have an opportunity to learn more about Tibetan culture and traditions," Thaksin said.

He wished every success to "this important event," which he said should further strengthen the close ties between the two countries.

The culture week is jointly sponsored by the Information Officeof China's State Council and the government of the Tibet Autonomous Region, in cooperation with several Thai entities including the Ministry of Tourism and Sports, the State Buddhism Committee, the Thai-Chinese and Economy Association, and the "Manager" magazine.
