China harvests gold medals on second day of World Military Games

World Championships title holder Qi Hui won the women's breaststroke 100-meter swimming Friday as China finished atop the World Military Games with five gold medals from the pool.

World Championships title holder Qi Hui won the women's breaststroke 100-meter swimming Friday as China finished atop the World Military Games with five gold medals from the pool.

Chinese swimmers won four of seven swimming finals on Friday.

China's Zhou Yafei took gold in the women's 100 butterfly in 59.32 seconds, leading Natalia Soutiaguina and Irina Bespalova of Russia. She also broke the record of the World Military Games.

Early on Friday, Zhao Tao claimed the men's 200m backstroke title in two minutes and 02.33 seconds and his compatriot Cheng Jiaru won in the women's 100m freestyle with 56 seconds.

In diving events, Chinese Peng Bo defeated his teammate Liu Junhong to claim the title of men's 1-meter springboard with 443.20 points. This is the first gold medal that China won in the Games.

Russia also picked up three golds from the swimming pool. Pavel Balachov won the 100m freestyle and Roman Ivanovski edging out his compatriot Sergey Gerasimov in a hotly contested 100m breaststroke.

Natalia Umyskova of Russia ran past China's duo Yang Yuting and Zhang Jing to win the gold medal of women's 3m springboard diving.

Umyskova collected 575.65 points to claim the title, beating Yang Yuting into second place on 555.75 points.

Zhang Jing, the 1m springboard champion of the second World Military Games in 1999, got the bronze on 540.35.

Sergiy Advena of Ukraine won the men's 200m butterfly swimming race 2:00.47, touching just ahead of Italian Francesco Vespe and Luca Gardonio.
