Serial activities commemorating 600th anniversary of Zheng He's expedition

The lecture conference commemorating the 600th anniversary of Zheng He's expedition jointly sponsored by the Ministry of Communications, the State Bureau of Oceanic Administration, the Ministry of Education and the Communist Youth League Central Committee was held in in Dalian on December 4 thus unveiled the serial activities held by the Chinese government in memory of Zheng He��s expedition.

Zheng He is a great, world-acknowledged navigator. From 1405AD to 1433AD, he launched seven times�� sailing to oceans afar with large fleets. Through the Southeast Asia, the Indian Ocean, he reached the Red Sea and Africa and visited over 30 countries and regions. The expeditions were unsurpassable among their contemporaries in terms of the scale of the fleets, the navigation technology, the difficulty and organization.

The year 2005 will be the 600th anniversary of Zheng He's expedition. The central government attached great importance to the relevant commemorative activities and decided to establish a preparation leading group for those activities. Various circles at home and abroad are very keen on those activities.

Six serial commemorative activities

The central government decided to launch six important commemorating activities from 2003 to 2005. The six activities are:

1. In July 2005, a commemorative conference will be held in Beijing

2. In July 2005, a commemorative exhibition will be held in Beijing

3. A program made by China Central Television (CCTV) will be broadcast in 2005

4. In June or July 2005, the ��Zheng He Navigation and International Oceanic Expo�� will be held in Shanghai

5. Knowledge competitions, lectures and summer camps on navigation and oceanic knowledge to be held every year from 2003 to 2005

6. From 2003 to 2005, commemorative academic exchanges will be held in Shanghai, Fujian Province and Jiangsu Province.
