A total of 74 bodies of civilians killed by rebels of the Lord's Resistance Army (LRA) have been discovered in Lira district, northern Uganda, reported local weekly Sunday Monitor.

The bodies, mainly of young men and women were gathered from Amugo sub-county, about 70 km southeast of Lira town.

Most of the bodies bore deep cuts, proving that the victims were simply hacked, the report said.

Lira district chairman Franco Ojur told the press on Saturday that relatives of the victims found the bodies in bushes.

"Because that particular sub-county has been under attack, no one knew how many people were killed or abducted because most had fled to Lira town," said Ojur.

LRA rebels, based in southern Sudan, have killed at least 30,000 people and displaced 1.3 million people in their 17-year rebellion.
