A Commonwealth committee on Zimbabwe ended work Sunday without being able to bridge a growing divide on whether to continue suspension of the southern African nation, a British spokesman said.

Speaking at a press briefing, the official spokesman of the British prime minister said South Africa was insistent that the ban on President Robert Mugabe's regime be lifted.

"The problem appears to be that South Africa does not accept that Zimbabwe should remain suspended," Prime Minister Tony Blair's spokesman told reporters at the Commonwealth Heads of Governmentmeeting in Abuja.

The six-nation committee -- Australia, Canada, India, Jamaica, Mozambique and South Africa -- was set up to hammer out a deal to heal the body's rift over how to deal with Zimbabwe.
