This year has witnessed a sharp rise in the number of ships from the neighboring Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK) engaged in border trade with China, according to the Dandong Customs Office.

In the first 10 months of this year, 56 DPRK vessels were involved in the fledgling border business, 18.5 times the figure in the corresponding period of last year.

The border business between China and DPRK is mostly done aboard vessels anchored on the lower reaches of the Yalu River, a border river between the two countries, between Dandong, in northeast China's Liaoning Province, and Sinuiju, DPRK.

In the past, most of the vessels were from China, but this year the number of DPRK ships, mostly with a capacity of 500 tons or less, has increased significantly, which has also promoted the shipping business in Dandong, totaling 45,138 tons in the first 10 months.
