US Under Secretary of Defense Douglas Feith said Monday that the decision on redeploying some US military bases will be made next year.

Feith said the realignment issue needs to be discussed ahead ofmaking the final decision and implementing the decision will take time, possibly several years.

Feith arrived here from Brussels Monday to discuss the issue with Polish Defense Minister Jerzy Szmajdzinski.

After their talks, Feith told reporters the consultations will be held at several stages and the current discussions with US allies focus on strategic issues. He said their views will influence the US government and pledged that no decision will be made ahead of the consultations.

The Polish minister said the US redeployment plan parallels Poland's views on the issue.

Poland supports the US realignment at a time when the country faces the threat of terrorism and mass destructive weapons, Szmajdzinski said.

He said the deployment of US military bases on Polish territorywill be considered as a move to improve security and relations with its neighbor countries.

Poland is the first country among Central and East European nations to discuss the issue with the United States. On Nov. 25, US President George W. Bush said the US government was readjustingUS global military depolyments and was discussing redeployments inEurope with its allies.
