German trade with China booms

Germany's trade with China increasedby double digits in September, continuing the booming trend in recent years, the German Federal Statistics Office reported Tuesday.

Germany's trade with China increasedby double digits in September, continuing the booming trend in recent years, the German Federal Statistics Office reported Tuesday.

The trade with China, which has now emerged as Germany's biggest commercial partner in the Asian region, grew to 1.7 billion euros (2.08 billion US dollars), up 34.8 percent over September 2002, the office said.

Meanwhile, imports from China, at 2.2 billion euros (2.70 billion US dollars), were 19 percent higher.

According to reports from China, its trade with Germany has been on double-digit growth in the past five years and reached 33.5 billion US dollars in the first 10 months of this year, a 49.8 percent increase over the same period last year.

Also in September, total German exports came to 58.2 billion euros (71.34 billion US dollars), 5.4 percent higher than in September 2002. Imports were up by a mere 1.2 percent to 43.9 billion euros (53.81 billion US dollars).

The German exports to other 14 EU countries, which collectivelyremain the largest trading partner of Germany, grew 8.4 percent inSeptember to 32.2 billion euros (39.47 billion US dollars), while US-bound exports were down 5.1 percent to 5.4 billion euros (6.62 billion US dollars).

Germany's exports to Central and Eastern Europe amounted to 7.3billion euros (8.95 billion US dollars), 7.2 percent higher than in September 2002, the statistics office said.
