A campaign to select the top 10 judges in the country by public voting was launched Wednesday in China, sources with the Supreme People's Court of China said.

The campaign aims to promote the work of the people's courts, said Su Zelin, chief judge of the Supreme People's Court.

The final list will be selected from twenty candidates, recommended by the People's Courts at all levels, through public votes across the country.

The event, jointly sponsored by the Supreme People's Court and China Central Television (CCTV), is the first appraisal of its kind in China.

The result will be released in January 2004, when an awarding ceremony will be held, said Su.
