Government officials and intellectual property experts from the Chinese mainland, Hong Kongand Macao special administrative regions convened here Thursday, to discuss how to protect intellectual property and strengthen lawenforcement.

At the opening ceremony, Li Yuguang, vice commissioner of the State Intellectual Property Office (SIPO) said intellectual property is becoming more important in economic globalization.

After China's entry into the World Trade Organization, Li said, the Chinese mainland, Hong Kong and Macao needed to coordinate more closely in protecting intellectual property.

While creating an economic environment friendly to innovation, government bodies should encourage enterprises to incorporate intellectual property strategy into their overall development plans.

Stephen Selby, director of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region Intellectual Property Department, said Hong Kong always attaches great importance to intellectual property protection. He said the two-day symposium might help the three sides better coordinate with each other.

Tai Kin Ip, acting deputy director of the Macao Special Administrative Region Economic Services, said cooperation among the three sides on intellectual property will be greatly conduciveto the economic partnership. He regarded the symposium as a good platform for deepening understanding and sharing experience.

The annual symposium began in 2000.
