China will enhance penalties against criminals undermining market economy order, according to the second meeting of the regular exchange and coordination mechanism between the Chinese government and foreign-invested firms here Friday.

Earlier this year, a national market order rectification office set up the mechanism for an exchange of views with foreign-invested enterprises on the fight against fakes, protection of intellectual property rights, improvement of the foreign investment environment and safeguarding an open, fair and competitive market order.

The Chinese government is drawing up a document on reinforcing links between the procuratorate departments and the administrative law-execution departments to better crack down on such crimes, said Yuan Ming, an official of the Supreme People's Procuratorate, at the meeting.

In December 2001, The Supreme People's Procuratorate issued a regulation to urge administrative departments to hand over such criminal cases to judicial departments, but currently problems still exist in coordination between the administrative and judicial departments in this regard.

Zhang Zhigang, vice-minister of commerce, told the meeting that the mechanism will keep focusing on the protection of intellectual property rights as well as cracking down on fake and shoddy products next year.
